Metal Machining

Metal machining is an important tool in order to remove and process materials. It is further defined as a series of processes making use of different machine tools like lathes, drill presses and milling machines. In combination with these gadgets, a sharp cutting tool is also utilized in the process in order to come up with the desired geometrical shape from the metal. It may form part of recreational activities while for some it may mean a serious job.

There are different machining operations used in the metal industry. The most basic ones are drilling, milling and turning. Additionally, categories such as boring, broaching, planing, sawing and shaping may be considered as miscellaneous processes. In the succeeding paragraphs, each of these processes are explained.

Basic processes for metal machining

As mentioned awhile back, there are basic machining processes. Drilling is one of the most popular types and is done in the principle of producing or refining holes on the metal. The process is done with the help of drill presses or with standard tools that contain rotating cutters or cutting edges. Usually, the cutting edges are placed on the material’s lower extremity before it comes in contact and puts a hole on the work piece.

Another basic process is milling. This is a methodology where the cutting tool is used in order to come up with a straight surface. The cutting edges are moved in a slower manner in order to come up with the desired shape of the product. This may be sub-classified into two processes namely peripheral and face milling.

The third of all basic metal machining processes is called turning. In this process, the cutting tool contains a single cutting edge. This technique is often employed when the desired geometrical shape out of the process is a cylinder.

Other types of machining processes

Aside from the three basic types of machining processes for metals, there are other kinds to consider. One is boring or the process of enlarging a hole that may have resulted from the drilling process. This is more of a finishing procedure used in the final steps of manufacturing a certain product.

Another process under the miscellaneous metal machining procedures is burnishing. This is done in order to make the end product shiny. It can be performed by using a drill press, a lathe or a milling tool. In all these processes, single pointed or multiple-edged tools may be used depending on the procedure’s requirements.
